Way back on Day 3 I wrote about cleaning and clearing your space, and said that I would revisit the topic later in the series because it’s so important. In that post, I was talking mainly about decluttering — physically lightening your home by letting go of things that you no longer use, that you’re keeping out of guilt, that are associated with bad memories, or that, in the words of Marie Kondo (cleaning guru and author of the bestselling The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up), no longer “spark joy.” If you’ve gotten rid of some unwanted stuff then your home already feels lighter and happier, and probably so do you.
In this post, we’re taking it to the next level and doing an energetic space-clearing. This ritual cleanses the home of the lingering negative energies that build up in every home over time. If you’ve ever walked into a room after someone has had an argument you’ve probably felt this kind of energy…the atmosphere feels thick and heavy, and it negatively affects everyone and everything exposed to it. Anger, depression, illness, grief, addiction, stress…it all builds up and lingers and drags down the vibration of the whole house. Space-clearing will clear out toxicity, and revitalize and energize the life force — or chi — of your home in a way that you will actually feel.
This ritual can be as simple or complex as you want it to be but before you begin, make sure to declutter as much as possible and do a thorough cleaning. Open all the windows and doors. You may want to shower or bathe both before and after. Make sure you’re calm and centered and set the intention that you’re cleansing your space of negative energies. Then include one or more of the following elements:
- Sound. Starting at the front door, clap loudly or ring a bell in every corner of every room in the house, including closets. You could also use your own voice and sing or chant.
- Smudge with sage. Smudging, or fanning smoke throughout every room in your home, is a cleansing and purifying ritual that goes back centuries. Smudge sticks are wrapped bundles of dried herbs and are inexpensive and easy to find. I ordered mine on Amazon. Carefully light the end and blow it out so the herbs are smoldering. Place it in a small fireproof dish (some people use an abalone shell to represent the water element) and carry the dish in one hand while you walk through your house and fan the smoke with the other. Make sure to get in every nook and cranny. You might want to chant an affirmation as you do it, or simply keep your intention in mind.
- Light candles. This is an optional step, but I did it. I got a small white votive candle for each room, and placed it in a small dish with some sea salt. (Fire and the color white for purification, and the salt to absorb excess negative energy.) Before I began my ritual, I lit each candle. I let them all burn for about a half hour after I finished and then I extinguished them.
If you Google space clearing, you’ll find all kinds of rituals and instructions. Some say to move through the house clockwise, others say counterclockwise (I did it clockwise). Some say do it on a full moon, others say just before, still others say only during a waning moon. (I did it during the waning.) I say this is obviously not an exact science, so experiment and do what feels right to you. I may change things up the next time. Space clearing can be done as often as you want to — once a month, seasonally, once a year, or whenever you feel like the energy in your home is heavy. No matter when you do it, you will feel the difference.
