I could just as easily have titled this post “Be Your Authentic Self” but that’s not as much fun, is it? One of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies, The Family Stone, is when laid-back Luke Wilson tells uptight Sarah Jessica Parker, “You have a freak flag. You just don’t fly it.”
We all have a freak flag — the quirks and little weirdnesses that make us unique — but most of us are trying so hard to fit in and be accepted that we don’t show them to the world. I was thinking about this the other day when a good friend suggested to me that I might get more readers and coaching clients if I toned down the whole Tarot thing. She made the reasonable point that a lot of people see Tarot reading as weird, silly, evil, or…well, just plain freaky.
But the thing is, I tried hiding that part of myself already. I had a previous blog where I wrote about wellness but left out all the spiritual, Tarot and “freaky woo-woo” stuff. I was afraid it would turn people off, even though it’s my belief that spiritual health and physical health are two sides of the same coin, and that Tarot is an amazing tool for clarity and self-discovery. I was denying my passion and consequently my writing had no life, no spark. The blog fizzled out because I wasn’t allowing my authentic voice to come through.
This blog is going to be different. I’ll write from my passionate heart about all the things that light my fire and trust that the perfect readers will find me. Some people may be turned off or think I’m weird and that’s okay. This blog isn’t for them. I’m done worrying about what people think of me, and contorting myself into a box to fit in and make people comfortable. Just so everyone who visits my little corner of the internet knows who they’re getting, I laid it all out right in my bio: ” I’m a smoothie-drinking, blog-writing, crystal-wearing, mantra-chanting, book-reading, sage-burning, high-vibing, light-working, Tarot-reading, certified holistic wellness coach.”
The masks we wear to be accepted are heavy, and it takes a lot of effort to keep them from slipping. When you drop it and start allowing your radiant unique self to shine through in all its glorious weirdness, your vibration will rise and you’ll inspire others to do the same. You’ll start attracting other authentic souls like a magnet, and the ones who can’t handle your radiance will fade away.
So let those freak flags fly high!
