So far in this series I’ve had you try meditating and suggested you declutter your home, but today I have an easy tip: savor small pleasures.
The photo above shows my inviolable Sunday ritual, a simple pleasure that I indulge in every week without fail. As soon as I get out of bed, I head to Wawa (the best convenience store ever) and pick up a 20 oz. coffee and a Sunday paper. I also grab a breakfast sandwich for my son, which is his small pleasure. Then I come back home, get comfy on the couch, and spend an hour sipping my coffee and reading the paper. It’s such a simple, inexpensive thing, but I look forward to it all week long.
So many of us rush around from task to task, errands on top of errands, racing through our lives without taking the time to slow down and savor the sweet little moments that make it all worth it. Life is made up of moments…make sure you spend some of them doing things that make you happy. I’m talking little things…like leafing through a magazine, sipping a steamy cup of hot cinnamon tea, reading a chapter of a great book, savoring a decadent square of dark chocolate, working on a challenging crossword puzzle.
Those are some of my simple pleasures. What are yours? Can you find a little time today to indulge in something that’s just for you? The trick to really enjoying a small pleasure is to stay in the moment and experience it with all your senses (without thinking of what you “should” be doing instead), and to let yourself have this precious time without guilt.
Don’t forget my advice from Day 1: Life is supposed to be fun! Happiness is your birthright. Begin by allowing yourself small pleasures and savoring the sweet moments.
The laundry will wait.
